Research of My Subject Matter (Hannah)
In order to get started I interviewed my subject matter, Hannah, about a memory that is most significant to her. I chose Hannah because I am very close with her, but I wanted to get to know her better on a personal level. I was able to learn of an experience that meant something extraordinary to her. In doing so, I learned about a memory that will stick with her forever and the relationships she had created along the way. Field hockey is a major part of her life and more specifically she will always remember the Penn Manor game that took place on the Cumberland Valley home turf. To read/learn more, I included a link that has my questions and her answers during our interview.

After that, I researched some photographs using smoke bombs that I liked. I looked up different ways to incorporate the smoke within the body. For example, in the first two photographs the head is fully engulfed by the smoke whereas in the others, the body is only surrounded by the smoke.

After that, I researched videos on how to use the smoke bombs to take photographs. In these videos, it gives tips on what to do and how to use the smoke bombs. For example, you must always take the wind into considerations. In addition, you should have a routine of poses set before you set off the smoke bombs since the time is limited. Also, have another individual hold the smoke bomb so that you can solely focus on taking the pictures.

Then, I began taking pictures of Hannah. First, we set up one camera on the tripod and tested the setting for taking repetitive shots within a certain amount of seconds. After that, we came up with a set of poses so that when we put the smoke bomb off, we would not waste time knowing what pose to do next. We do multiple practice rounds of that. Next, we set off the first smoke bomb and I took pictures while the tripod was also taking pictures. We then set off the second smoke bomb and continued to take pictures as well. I took pictures of a variety of different poses so that I could decide later on which ones best showcased my vision. Below is a contact sheet (in google photos) of all my photos I took for this project.

Process
When I had finished taking all of the pictures, I looked through them and chose the picture that had the best focal point with the majority of the smoke in the frame. Then, I chose two other photographs that had the subject in an action shot as if she was playing field hockey. I then used photoshop to blend the images together. I also found other images that had smoke in the air and blended them in as well to add more smoke to the photograph. This created a more unified piece by capturing the subject matter as if she was coming out/through the smoke. I did this because it gives it a more intense effect and the smoke represents the energy and togetherness the team had played with that game. I then used lightroom to enhance the color red and add a slight black vignette so that the focal points are more prominent.
Reflection
I chose Hannah because we have been really close friends since middle school, but I have not gotten to understand her love for field hockey. I wanted to showcase Hannah's most significant memory using smoke bombs. I chose red smoke because it is a CV color but also because red is an intense, eye-catching color in my opinion. The smoke represents the flow and energy the team had throughout that game (The smoke is one big movement, moving as one). They worked together as one and even though they did not win, they persevered through the hardship. I had the subject matter looking as if she is coming out of the smoke because it resembles the team breaking out of their shell and putting all their effort forth into winning. It also represents the fact that Hannah is going to be moving on in her life and will no longer play for CV, she essentially is breaking through into another chapter of her life. I first chose the picture in the middle because it showcases Hannah's face and seriousness she upholds when she is playing the game. I then chose the image to the left because the stance is facing toward the middle stance and leads the viewer's eyes to the center focal point. Likewise, I chose the image to the right because it is also guiding the viewer's eyes into the middle of the photograph as well. I found it difficult, in my opinion, to photoshop this piece and get it to where the image looks like one. The smoke made it hard to blend. Also, I do not normally use photoshop so this took me out of my element that I am use to. In addition, it was very very difficult to use the smoke bombs because they only lasted for a minute each. With the first smoke bomb we used, we figured out that the person holding it should not go around the subject matter because the wind started to blow. Therefore, during the second smoke bomb, they stood to the right of hannah and waved the smoke up and down and left and right. Then, the wind blew the smoke that encapsulated her body. Overall though, I enjoyed the challenge of photographing with the smoke bombs and I also enjoyed learning how to layer the images in a way that they would look like one.

From listening to Jeanette's memory, I had decided to do a milk bath. I then researched some examples of a milk bath which helped me further my idea. I also researched different poses, and methods in order to create a milk bath.

After that, I researched steps to creating a milk bath. I looked up the best ingredients that will make the water look foggy like milk. I ended up using six cans of evaporated milk and it worked great! I also wanted to use flowers as a representation of the flowers her grandma had around the house. From there I researched whether I should use real or fake flowers and it turned out that fake flowers would sink. Therefore, I went out and bought a dozen roses. Also, lighting played a huge part in creating the perfect atmosphere.

Then, I began taking pictures of Jeanette in a bath full of milk. We first filled the bath with water and then added the six cans of evaporated milk. We stirred it for a couple minutes as well. After she got in, we picked the rose petals off of the roses and placed them around her. I took a variety of different poses so that I could decide later on which best showcased my vision. Process
First, we filled the bath with six cans of evaporated milk. Then we had Jeanette get in the bathtub and added the roses while she was in. After taking numerous pictures with different poses, lighting, and angles, I narrowed them down to some of my favorites. I then cropped them in photoshop to the dimensions that best fit the each photograph. After that, I edited all of the photographs in light room. I first found a setting that I liked and then I set it as a preset. After that, I was able to use that preset for all of the photographs and changed some of the settings to a degree to fit the lighting of each piece. Doing this, brought out the color of the red that resembles her grandmother and the milk that resembles Jeanette's memories.
Reflection
For my second concentration piece, I wanted to interview Jeanette. I have known Jeanette since middle school and wanted to get to know her better. Therefore, I asked her about her most significant memory. She explained to me that she has never met her grandma but has always thought about the person she was and the person she could have been. Jeanette then goes on to explain that the place/thing that makes her feel most connected to her grandma was at a pond near her house. This memory makes her feel sad because she never truly got to witness how good of a woman her grandma was. In addition, Jeanette's grandmother always had her house filled with roses. Therefore, I wanted to fill the bathtub with these roses as well. From listening to Jeanette's memory about her grandmother, I decided to do a milk bath. The bath represents the pond in which Jeanette feels most connected to her grandma. I then decided to add milk because the vision she has of her grandma is foggy/unclear in a sense since she has never met her. In addition, I decided to add red rose petals as well because Jeanette's grandma always had roses around her house. Also, from this I had Jeanette put on red lipstick as a way to connect to her grandmother through the red rose petals. This color of red resembles unity. I wanted to showcase the sadness that this memory brings Jeanette. Therefore, she is looking away, down, or directly at the camera in a serious matter as if she is reflecting on the memory herself. I enjoyed exploring a different type of photography, that being a milk bath. Since my bathtub was small and had a built-in sliding door, it was very difficult to get Jeannette positioned in different ways and to be able to snap good photographs of her. I believe I could have improved by showcasing even more positions and adding in more elements in the bath as well. However, I am pleased with how it turned out.

Concentration 1: Memories
Research of My Subject Matter (Audrey)
In order to get started I interviewed my subject, Audrey, about a past memory that she has experienced. I asked her a variety of questions in which she has explained a significant memory in her life and where it has taken place. I also asked her the importance of this place and how this memory made her feel. Below is the questions I had asked Audrey and her responses to them as well.
Image Examples
I researched some examples of double exposure that I liked. I also researched different ways and methods of how to do double exposure which results in a different end look.

Online Research
After that, I researched how to do double exposure in photoshop. I wanted to execute my piece using a double exposure aspect because then the photograph could embody both the idea of Audrey and the landscape where her memory has taken place. I used the following websites to learn how to photoshop the double exposure. Below is the links I used to create my piece.

Photographs
Then I began taking photographs of Audrey in the studio. We took pictures of a variety of different poses so that I could decide which one would best fit the vision I was going for. I also took pictures of the trees because Audrey's memory is based upon picking up leaves with her family at her grandparents house. Therefore, I wanted to incorporate trees in my piece to showcase Audrey's story through the landscape. Below is a contact sheet (in google photos) of all my photos I took for this project.
Process
After I had gathered all my research and had a sense of what I needed to do, I began to photoshop. I basically followed the tutorials I found on youtube and also received help from my teacher. However, below are some brief screenshots and explanations of the process. Therefore, I first cropped my image, and turned it into black and white.
After that, I needed to have a white background in order to proceed. Therefore, I turned my background as white as I could. After that, I played with the vibrancy, levels, etc to make my piece look the way I wanted it to before I went on to add the photograph of the trees. In addition, I went around the edges and cleaned them up by erasing the gray excess left behind from the background.
Then, I cropped the image of the trees in order to make sure I had what I wanted to have in the picture before I merged it with Audrey. After I merged the two pictures I played around with the blending settings / tools in order to create the appropriate transparency.
After I was finished merging, I went through and brought back Audrey's facial features so they would not be drowned out by the trees. I also brought back her skin and hair but let her shirt remain the same transparency as I made it with the blending modes. I wanted her shirt to remain dominant with the trees so they are better showcased throughout the piece. In addition, I wanted to incorporate a color from the image of the trees so make the piece look more coherent. Therefore I took the light blue from the sky and filled the background with it. Below is my final piece.
Reflection
For my first concentration piece, I wanted to interview Audrey. In doing so, I found a memory from her childhood which made her very happy. Therefore, I wanted to find a landscape that resembled where her childhood memory took place. In this case it took place at her grandparents house where she raked and collected leaves. So I photographed trees and told her story through that landscape. When I photographed Audrey, I wanted to showcase how her memory made her feel and the emotions she felt. Therefore, she is smiling and cheerful in the photograph. In addition, I had her look off into the distance which as a result makes it seem as if she is reminiscing about something. I also enjoyed creating a double exposure piece because it allows me to merge the photos together making her story a part of her or within her. I struggled with some of the photoshop aspect of it. In addition, I believe I could improve on making her facial features more defined and dominant in the piece to showcase her features better.

Breadth 2: The Power of Words
Breadth 2: The Power of Words
For my second breadth piece I chose to focus on societal issue / concerns. My primary point of interest includes typography, text, filters, effects, actions, and lighting. In addition, I included color, contrast, and framing. I wanted to focus on the societal issue of abuse. Specifically, verbal abuse. In order to capture my thoughts and ideas, I first photographed the subject matter with headphones in and her hands covering the headphones. This represents the impact words have upon individuals being that nothing can block out the pain from the words that are being expressed. I then took the image into photoshop where I typed up words that were hurtful, abusive, and overall cruel. I made each line a different text and style from the one before it so that they each would stand out in their own way. This displays diversity as well and captures the numerous different words that an individual could encounter with verbal abuse. After that, I wanted to incorporate this idea of censorship being that the subject matter is experiencing this abuse but does not have the voice, power, or ability to fight back. She is restricted or even prohibited to right back in a sense. I made the bar across the subjects mouth to represent this idea and I turned it red because red associates with the idea of violence. I then took my image into lightroom where I added a vignette to really focus in on the subject matter itself and frame the whole idea of the piece. I also explored with the idea of lighting and contrast. I made this piece black and white so that the red really stood out to the audience. I personally relate to this issue because of experiences from when I was younger. My brother and I would argue and he would call me names almost everyday. It is important to focus on the issue of name calling when children are younger because they can carry that habit with them when they get older. For example, in high school I still see individuals calling others names, stereotyping them, and discriminating them. Name calling can leave a long lasting impact on individuals. They can carry it with them throughout their life. This is why I wanted to make a piece revolving around this issue and the importance of it.

Breadth 1: Mask
Breadth 1: Insecurities
For my first breadth piece I decided to chose the human figure and focus specifically on the face. My primary point of interest includes filters, effects, and actions. In addition, it includes color, texture, and contrast. I first wanted to focus on the idea of insecurities within the face. To do so, I first did half of my subject's face with full coverage makeup. I did this because people typical hide their insecurities with masks such as makeup. I chose the color red for the eye and lips because it pops out and the color is associated with confidence, strength, and power. I initially tried to use lighting to split the face in half, making the half without makeup (the natural side) darker. I ended up editing both sides in photoshop to accentuate both side's features using color, contrast, and texture. The filters and effects really express the difference amongst both sides. I personally relate to this because every time I go to school I am in the habit of putting makeup on. I never go to school without any on because I am so use to waking up and as part of my routine, I put it on. However, I see other teenage girls not able to go out of the house without makeup. It is very evident how insecurities have the power to take over an individual. In order for other girls to feel "confident" they believe that they must put a mask on. The mask resembling makeup. This is why I wanted to create a piece about this topic because many girls can relate.

First Day College: Chaos
BFirst Day Collage: Chaos
When I walk into school on the first day of a new year I see crowded hallways and excited children. My collage represents chaos because on the first day everyone is running around, talking to their friends, and in a hurry to find their classes. I ripped the magazine of the crowded animals to represent the hallways. I then covered that with orange paper because when you're walking in the hallways the first day you get overwhelmed and excited and therefore can not see everyone and everything that is happening. That is also represented through the holes in the image as well. The edges of the collage is rough and missing.
